In partnership with Mohawk College, IFNA conducted a carpentry training program in Pikangikum First Nation led by home improvement celebrity, Jon Eakes. Three different groups of trainees from Pikangikum learned basic carpentry and renovation skills for building and repairing houses over 2-week periods. Eighteen Pikangikum community members now have basic carpentry and renovation skills to either help in finding jobs, pursue further education or training in the trades, or be able to perform small maintenance/renovation in their own homes. Jonathan Gregg, IFNA Strategic Initiatives Director, will review how the program came together, specific approaches to training, results, and future plans.
All those involved in providing opportunities for community members to enhance their skills and knowledge can learn from this session including housing managers, Chief and Council members, education directors, economic development officers, etc.
Jonathan Gregg is from Lac Seul First Nation and currently supports his community and four others as the Strategic Initiatives Director at IFNA leading projects focused on building self-reliance of member First Nations. Previously, Jonathan led the Technical Services department at IFNA for 6 years and leant his expertise to OFNTSC for a collective 6 years. Combined with prior years in construction project management including owning his own business, Jonathan has over 20 years of experience in construction.
