FIRST NATIONS HOUSING CONFERENCE

FIRST NATIONS
HOUSING CONFERENCE
2015

BUILDING SKILLS. BUILDING FUTURES.

The 13th Annual First Nations Northern Housing Conference took place on February 10, 11 & 12, 2015 at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The First Nations Northern Housing Conference Working Group would like to thank our generous funders and sponsors for their continued support, and the speakers and tradeshow exhibitors for sharing their knowledge and expertise. Most importantly, we would like to thank the delegates for coming from across Ontario and Canada to join us. Your participation is the reason this conference has been such a resounding success for so many years.

COMMUNITY HOUSING RECOGNITION AWARDS

Naicatchewenin First Nation

First established in 1992, the Naicatchewenin First Nation Housing Policy was developed for the betterment of their community. The policy lays out everything from how to apply for housing to home damage protocol. The result is accountability on the part of homeowners and tenants, transparency on the part of the committee, and a well-maintained community.

Along with the policy is the Housing Committee, a group that oversees the implementation of the Housing Policy. Housing Committee Members are people who, regardless of their occupation or age are genuinely interested in the Housing needs of the community and are willing to work to see those needs are met.

The Housing Policy is a living document and is under constant revision. Newly developed this year is the upcoming voluntary Maintenance Program. Home owners can pay a monthly fee, which would keep the home eligible for Band managed repairs, such as roofs, doors, windows and health related issues.

BUILDERS CHALLENGE

Stairs

The Builders Challenge event was once again hosted by TV and Radio personality and all ’round handyman Jon Eakes. The challenge consists of 4 demonstrations and competitions detailing proper techniques for building Stairs.

These demonstrations taught delegates:

  • to properly layout the rise and run of a stringer using a framing square and how to cut it and methods of attaching it to an entrance deck;
  • the maximum distance between stringers and how to properly install a riser and treads on a run of stairs;
  • the minimum height of a guard for residential construction and a method of how to install them for a run of stairs;
  • and how to tie all the posts together and the proper spacing of pickets in order to ensure enough strength and safety in the system.
