With more houses already built in a community than projected to be built in the near future, maintaining the housing that exists is an essential part of the general solution to the constant housing shortages. Creating a culture of preventative maintenance can only happen if people understand how simple prevention can be, have access to necessary tools and products, learn how to install or apply the products and receive community support and encouragement to maintain their houses. A rarely tapped resource for change is to train grade school kids in how to do some of the basics and recognize their achievements in the community.
Let’s start with visible daily challenges: Avoiding frozen locks; avoiding frozen or stuck windows; avoiding frozen pipes; fixing squeaky hinges; solidifying loose doors; tightening loose window cranks; spotting mould; avoiding mould with wall/floor spacers; tightening deck rails; etc.
